Andrea Leone defends his PhD thesis on Thursday 13 June 2024

POSTED: 6 June 2024

In August 2020, Andrea Leone joined THREAD as ESR 4 at NTNU Trondheim under the supervision of Elena Celledoni. He completed a PhD thesis on Data-driven and geometric methods for mechanical systems in March 2024 and will now be the third ESR from the THREAD network who defends his thesis.

The day starts with Andrea's trial lecture An introduction to Gaussian processes and their connections to numerical analysis (13 June 2024 at 10:15 CEST) followed by the public defence (13 June 2024 at 13:15 CEST), both at room G144, Electrical Engineering Building at Gløshaugen, NTNU). Follow this link to participate digitally (Meeting ID: 994 7301 5206, Passcode: 381495, valid for both events).

The thesis summarises results from five papers that have been published in international journals like Journal of Computational Dynamics, Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics and International Journal of Computer Mathematics or have been submitted for publication. Three of them consider Lie group integrators with different numerical applications for Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems evolving on manifolds including a combination with deep learning algorithms.

The other two papers focus on the use of fully data-driven procedures for problems related to the fields of mechanical and subsea engineering. They consider supervised machine learning techniques for prediction and classification. One of these papers is based on Andrea's close collaboration with the THREAD team at FAU, whereas the other one is the result of his secondment to THREAD's industrial partner TechnipFMC in Lysaker, Norway.

Good luck for your defence, Andrea.
