Denise Tumiotto defends her PhD thesis on Thursday 23 April 2026

POSTED: 21 April 2026

It's time for the next follow-up event of the THREAD project: On Thursday 23 April 2026 at 16:15 CEST, Denise Tumiotto will defend her PhD thesis (lecture room HS 1.04, Von-Seckendorff-Platz 1, Halle (Saale) or online via BigBlueButton at https://mluconf.uni-halle.de/b/fel-xd8-dx6-z7t, no password required).

Denise joined the THREAD team six years ago as ESR1 to work under the supervision of Martin Arnold at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany. At the end of last year she submitted her thesis on A robust and efficient Lie group solver for Cosserat rod models with internal and external constraints. Today, she works at fleXstructures Italy, an international spin-off from Fraunhofer ITWM, click here to read more about her scientific background between mathematics and engineering and about her current professional activities.

The main focus of Denise's research has been on highly efficient non-iterative time integration methods for constrained systems in nonlinear configuration spaces and their application to Cosserat rod models with large rotations. Her novel integrators converge with order up to 5 and result in very accurate simulation results for typical benchmark problems like a beam's roll-up maneuvre or the Flying spaghetti.

She presented her results at international conferences like NUMDIFF-17 and the ECCOMAS Thematic Conferences on Multibody Dynamics (MULTIBODY 2023) and on Highly flexible slender structures (HFSS 2023) and published them as first author in a paper for the international journal Multibody System Dynamics. Denise enjoyed a fruitful cooperation with Brynjulf Owren, Elena Celledoni and Ergys Çokaj from the THREAD team at NTNU on the stability of time integration methods on nonlinear configuration spaces (results published at Journal of Computational Dynamics).

But the European Training Network THREAD has been much more than just research: Denise took actively part in THREAD's comprehensive training programme and joined the THREAD teams at ITWM, UIBK and NTNU for secondments. A three-month secondment to THREAD's industrial partner fleXstructures GmbH, Kaiserslautern paved the way to her current role at fleXstructures Italia Srl. Denise presented her research results at the MaGIC Manifolds and Geometric Integration Colloquia in 2022 and 2023 and gave an introduction to the IPS Cable Simulation software and its use in THREAD at the Industrie-Tag Informations-Technologie in November 2022 (joint presentation with Fabio Schneider-Jung, ITWM).

In June 2022 Denise, Konstantina and Ergys became film stars in THREAD's Living the project video. And - last but not least - Denise has, from time to time, provided very efficient behind-the-scenes support to THREAD's management by WhatsApp and other social media when the usual communication channels between Management team and some members of the THREAD consortium have failed.

Now the stage is yours, Denise. Good luck.
